A Mother’s Day Story: When My Mom Finally Believed in Me
Ghada AbuhakmehShare
There’s something about moms…
No matter how grown you are, how much you’ve built, or how many lives you impact—
to them, you’re still their baby.
And everything you do?
It’s just a little hobby.
For years, my mom didn’t fully understand what I was building.
This Mother’s Day, everything feels different.
What is a meaningful Mother’s Day message?
A meaningful Mother’s Day message expresses genuine love, gratitude, and appreciation. The most impactful messages are personal—sharing real experiences, emotions, and moments that reflect your relationship. Authenticity matters more than perfection, making even simple words feel powerful.
What makes Mother’s Day meaningful?
Mother’s Day becomes meaningful when it goes beyond gifts and focuses on connection. It’s a time to reflect, show appreciation, and recognize the everyday love and sacrifices that often go unnoticed.
How do you support someone caring for a parent?
Supporting someone caring for a parent means offering patience, understanding, and real help. Small actions like checking in, listening, or helping with daily responsibilities can ease the emotional and physical demands of caregiving.
For me, this Mother’s Day became something much deeper…
When Your Mom Doesn’t See Your Vision
For years, I don’t think my mom fully understood what I was doing with MYSKINBUDDY.
In her mind, I was somewhere between selling Tupperware and being part of an MLM…
and honestly, I’m not even sure she realized it was my company.
Meanwhile, behind the scenes…
I was building something real.
Networking. Traveling. Growing internationally.
Helping thousands of people feel confident in their skin.
But to her?
“Cute.”
Sometimes the people closest to you are the last ones to see your vision.
The Moment Everything Changed
I’ll never forget the day I walked into her room…
She was sitting in bed, holding my MYSKINBUDDY, trying to figure out how to use it.
No questions. No doubt.
Just… her using it.
She was staring at her reflection, noticing things we all notice…
and then she started.
And she didn’t stop.
When She Became My Best Customer (Without Meaning To)
Then came the obsession.
Using more serum than necessary.
Asking me for refills like it was water.
And of course—in true Arab mom fashion…
Every time someone came over:
“Take this. Try this. It’s amazing.”
(My inventory was not okay.)
I knew I made it when my mom started giving my products away.
The Mother’s Day I Never Expected
This year… everything changed.
On September 11th, my mom suffered five strokes.
And no—we didn’t choose that date… life just has a dark sense of humor sometimes.
Since then, my life has looked completely different.
I always say I now have a drunk toddler—
and I mean that with so much love.
She’s funny. Goofy. Impulsive.
Wants to touch everything.
Tries to get up when she shouldn’t.
And I’m there… helping her through all of it.
Caring for a Parent Changes You
It’s exhausting in a way you can’t explain…
But also deeply fulfilling.
Because the truth is—I almost lost her.
There was a moment in the ICU where I was told to prepare
for the possibility that she might not wake up.
And now?
She’s here.
Healing. Progressing. Fighting.
I’m okay with less… if it means I get more time with her.
When Life Slows Down Your Business
I won’t pretend this hasn’t affected my business.
It has.
My time is split.
My energy is different.
Growth looks slower.
But I’ve made peace with it.
Because right now…
This is where I’m meant to be.
A Message for Anyone Building Something
If someone in your life is building something…
Support them.
Believe in them before the world does.
Because those moments—
when someone close to you finally sees you—
they matter more than anything.
This Mother’s Day
This year feels different.
It’s slower. Softer. More present.
It’s helping her walk.
Laughing at her randomness.
Watching her relearn life…
And maybe…
Sharing a skincare moment in bed again.
Love,
Ghada
